Korean female pop icons Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa — collectively known as Blackpink — have emerged as global music superstars after Time Magazine named the quartet as “Entertainer of the Year” for 2022.

The quartet “managed to become the biggest girl group in the world precisely by allowing its members to be solo stars in their own right,” according to TIME on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The magazine cited a list of Blackpink’s achievements for 2022, such as the performance of “Pink Venom” at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, the release of their second studio album “Born Pink” in September, and their world tour that kicked off in October, among others.

Despite their worldwide success, Jennie told Time that being a K-pop star is done “out of our heart.” “If we consider this in the business way, we wouldn’t be able to do this,” she added.

Time also praised Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa for being “four stars in their own way,” citing their “massive visibility” as solo artists, ambassadors for designer clothing brands, and social media stars.

“Blackpink will continue to play its role as a trendsetting icon, not only in music, but also in beauty, fashion, and other industries,” YG Entertainment chairman and CEO Yang Min-suk said in the report.

Blackpink made their debut in August 2016 with their first single album “Square Up” under YG Entertainment. Some of their biggest hits include “Boombayah”, “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du”, “Kill This Love”, “Shut Down”, and “How You Like That”, among others.

The girl group is set to perform at the Philippine Arena on March 25 and 26, 2023 as part of their “Born Pink” world tour. EDV
