Ryan Reynolds says Disney shelved his ‘Deadpool’ Christmas flick; got his brain eaten in ‘The Walking Dead’ ad

Ryan Reynolds disclosed that he co-wrote a “Deadpool Christmas movie” in 2018 with an aim to “see a song and dance number” in the anti-hero franchise, but this got shelved by Disney.

The Canadian-American actor brought this up during an interview with British news outlet Big Issue last Saturday, Nov. 19. In that interview, he was asked what from his films he thought would have “improved” if it had been a musical,

“I would love to see a song and dance number in a ‘Deadpool’ movie,” he responded.

“Four years ago, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick (‘Deadpool’ screenwriters) and I wrote a Christmas movie starring Deadpool,” he continued. “But it got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox and it never got made.”

Reynolds was referring to Disney’s $71 billion acquisition of Fox’s entertainment business in 2019, which led Reynold’s Deadpool to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

“Maybe one day we’ll get to make that movie. It’s not a musical,” he clarified, “But it’s a full ‘Deadpool’ Christmas movie — so one day.”

Reynolds is set to star in the third installment of “Deadpool” alongside Hugh Jackman who will be reprising his role as Wolverine. “Deadpool 3,” helmed by “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project” director Shawn Levy, is set for release in 2024.

‘I ate Ryan Reynolds’ brain’

But while the Deadpool Christmas movie project never materialized, Reynolds busied himself with several other projects.

Recently, he joined one of the four fan-favorite characters of The Walking Dead (TWD) in an amusing custom-produced advertisement for the finale of the long-running American series.

Film production outfit Maximum Effort partnered with TWD producer AMC Network’s Content Room to produce the ad starring Reynolds and series mainstay Laurie Holden, who was introduced as Andrea Harrison, the chief brains officer of advertising software company MNTN.

In his Instagram post, Reynolds said: “Maximum Effort brought a few characters back to life for #TWD tonight. It was a stupid amount of work and fun, especially for commercials that will run just once. Also… Worth it. #WalkingDeadvertising.”

His appearance with Holden was one of the most anticipated in the series, with Holden’s zombie character saying eating Reynolds’ brain still made her hungry.

“How do I know so much about MNTN Performance TV? I ate Ryan Reynold’s brain,” Holden’s character deadpanned. “I’m still hungry.”

Aside from Reynolds and Holden, other actors from the series made an appearance in the custom ads, such as Dallas Roberts (Milton Mamet), Joe Ando-Hirsh (Rodney), and Andrew West (Gareth), who also starred in other ads. EDV
