Rocco Nacino almost fell victim to a scammer who used the name and photo of his fellow actor Gabby Eigenmann to ask for P10,000.
Nacino had an online conversation with the poser who wanted to “borrow” P10,000 from him for a supposed online purchase, as seen on his Instagram page yesterday, March 1. He also showed a confirmation prompt for a transfer worth only P2 that states the recipient’s name, Sabina.
“Namuntikan pa ako dahil bagong gising ako. Buti na lang at naisipan ko muna silipin ang contact number para i-verify at tawagan si @gabbyeigenmann para manigurado,” he said. “Kasi alam ko mayaman ‘tong si brother Gabby at kung meron man uutang, ako dapat ‘yun sa kanya.”
(I almost fell for it because I just woke up then. Fortunately I thought of looking at the contact number to verify and call [Gabby Eigenmann] to make sure. Because I know brother Gabby is rich and if there’s anyone who should borrow money, it’s me from him.)
Nacino added that he decided to “ride” along with the poser’s plan so he could get the latter’s phone number, which he eventually obtained after asking for details for a mobile wallet.
“It’s sad to know that may mga gumagawa talaga ng ganito. Sana maging aral ito para sa ‘tin lahat na mag-ingat palagi at magkaroon ng presence of mind lalo na kapag pera na ang usapan,” he told fans.
(It’s sad to know that there are people who really do this. I hope this serves as a lesson for all of us to always be careful and have presence of mind especially if it’s about money.)
Eigenmann opted to laugh off the incident by quoting an error made by the poser and warning the public to be careful.
“Stay safe brother! At (And) sorry for the [disturbance]. Stay vigilant everyone,” he said.
Meanwhile, actor Mark Herras also poked fun at what happened by pointing out that the scammer talked like Nacino.
“In fairness ganyan ka makipag usap (that’s how you talk to others) mayor!” he told Nacino.
Nacino addressed the scammer, hoping she finds other ways to make money and not take a “shortcut.” He also said he would report the incident to authorities. /ra
