Maricel Soriano has joined the cast of the upcoming romantic-comedy film “Re-Live: A Tale of an American Island Cheerleader.”
The Diamond Star will be appearing in the movie alongside American actresses Rain Valdez and Rachel Leyco, Variety revealed exclusively last Sunday, Jan. 23. Soriano will be playing Thelma, the mother of Valdez and Leyco’s characters, Rowena and Rochelle.
“Re-Live” follows the story of the transgender movie star Rowena, who comes back to her home in Guam for her high school reunion. Rowena saw her visit as a chance to live out her childhood dream of becoming a cheerleader. However, her plans were affected when Thelma’s cancer begins to worsen and she learns the value of family.
“Having a legendary Filipino actress like Maricel Soriano strengthens our commitment to telling our stories from our authentic experiences and for our Filipinx diaspora,” Leyco and Valdez were quoted as saying.
“Re-Live” will begin shooting in Hawai’i and Guam in November. It is co-written by Valdez and Leyco, and executive-produced by Jhett Tolentino in association with Shant Joshi’s Fae Pictures. It is also Valdez’s feature directorial debut.
Leyco is a Filipino-American filmmaker, writer and actress. She appeared in theater performances as well as guest-starred in the NBC series “Chicago Fire,” as per her official website. Meanwhile, Valdez is a Philippine-born transgender actress who was nominated in the Primetime Emmy Awards for her lead role in the series “Razor Tongue.” Dana Cruz /ra
