Cristine Reyes looked back on what it was like for her to grow up in an “unloving environment” as she recalled the “hurtful” words her mother had told her as a child.
In an interview with Filipino-American entrepreneur Liza Florida for the latter’s “Eight Billion Podcast” on YouTube yesterday, Oct. 20, the “Starstruck” alum recounted how she constantly felt “unwanted” while growing up. Reyes added that she was in a “loving” adopted family before her biological mother took her back when she was 6 years old.
Despite her mother having a “big house,” Reyes felt she was not welcome in her own home.
“Ever since I moved to my biological mom, I felt that I didn’t have a voice. So as much as possible, I don’t really talk,” she told Florida.
The actress also looked back at the painful experiences she had as a child, revealing that her mother had attempted to abort her.
“I was very neglected when I was a child, at six years old. I remember whenever there’s a problem, I would constantly hear words, ‘You know, you should have died. You never should have been born, I tried so many times to abort you,'” Reyes narrated.
“I had to survive. I was always in survival mode during my early childhood,” she added. “That’s when it started. I always wanted to be alone because when I’m alone, I’m safe.”
Reyes admitted she felt very “bitter” for most of her adult life, but she hopes to continue being more aware of her emotions from her trauma, also to prevent herself from projecting her pain or anger onto others.
“I’m working on it, to be self-aware. Yeah, I have this past. I have a bad childhood but you can always make a difference,” she said. “We want to cut the curse. If you spread bitterness, [you] affect the world.” /ra
