“Kun Maupay Man It Panahon,” a film about a mother and son trying to survive the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda, starring Daniel Padilla and Charo Santos has bagged a special award at the Locarno Film Festival (LFF) in Switzerland.

“We have great news from Switzerland! ‘Kun Maupay Man It Panahon’ (Whether The Weather Is Fine) bags the Cinema e Gioventù Prize from the Concorso Cineasti del presente Junior Jury at the 74th Locarno Film Festival,” the film’s official Facebook page announced today, Aug. 15.

The award is an educational initiative of the festival, catering to students aged 18 to 23. It is given by youth juries who evaluate official entries in some of the film festival’s competitions, as per a release from LFF.

“Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” is the only Filipino entry in the LFF’s “Concorso Cineasti del presente” category. It competed alongside various films from Chile, France, China and the United States, among others.

“Kun Maupay Man It Panahon,” directed by Carlo Francisco Manatad and featuring newcomer Rans Rifol, was also chosen as one of the entries for the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Its inclusion in TIFF apparently becomes its North American premiere as well. The festival will run from Sept. 9 to 18.

Santos praised Padilla for his performance in “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon” after it finished shooting in February 2020. The veteran actress called the actor “one of a kind” and said he “amazed” her in every scene. JB
