Comedian Candy Pangilinan opened up about the lessons she learned from her failed marriage, stating that she now views her separation from her husband as a “blessing.”

Pangilinan recalled how her husband cheated on her and left her with their baby many years ago, in an interview with Toni Gonzaga on the latter’s YouTube vlog last Sunday, May 2.

“We were together for ten years tapos noong kinasal kami, medyo malabo na kami. Even before kami kinasal, meron na akong mga nahuli,” she told Gonzaga. (We were together for ten years and when we got married, our relationship was already rocky. Even before we got married, I already caught him [cheating].)

Back then, she chose to ignore her husband’s cheating and thought that getting pregnant will “save” her marriage.

“Before I gave birth, nandiyan pa naman siya pero sinasabi niya sa akin na iiwanan niya ako,” she recalled. (Before I gave birth, he was still there but he told me that he would leave me.)

Indeed, a month after she gave birth, her husband did walk away.

Pangilinan initially wanted to forgive her husband for his infidelity. She tried to fight for her marriage, telling Gonzaga that she treated her struggles as a “challenge.”

“Feeling mo kontrolado mo. ‘Hindi, kaya ko ito. Kaya ko ito.’ Para siyang laruan na hindi ko makuha,” she explained. (You feel like you’re in control. “No, I can do this. I can do this.” It’s like a toy that you can’t get.)

But she also revealed how her view of her failed marriage shifted after she found out that her son Quentin has autism. She now believes that while she struggled with her failed marriage, it helped her attend to her child’s special needs.

“Everything was a blessing. ‘Yung paghiwalay sa ‘kin, parang hinanda ako ni Lord. Binago niya ‘yung pagkatao ko, ‘yung mindset ko, ‘yung perception ko about things para handa ako for Quentin,” she said.

(Our separation was the Lord’s way of preparing me. He changed my personality, my mindset and my perception about things to prepare me for Quentin.)

While Pangilinan knows that being a solo parent is not easy, she believes her son is her “ticket to heaven.” She added that Quentin taught her to be patient, tolerant and grateful of the simple things in life. JB
