With their emotional portrayal of a couple splitting up on their wedding day, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto got people wondering how real their lines and feelings were to them in the “Paubaya” music video.
Starting out as a love team known as JoshLia, the two developed a romance and broke up in 2019. That said, Garcia did not hesitate to act again with his former partner when singer Moira Dela Torre approached him to star in her music video.
His friendship with Barretto, Dela Torre and her husband and “Paubaya” co-writer Jason Hernandez convinced him to take on the project, Garcia told Kim Chiu and Enchong Dee on “ASAP” yesterday, Feb. 21.
“Iyon iyong isa sa nagpa-oo talaga sa akin. Seryoso, totoo iyon,” he said. (That was one of the reasons I said yes. I’m serious, it’s true.)
“Si Moi iyong nag-ask sa akin eh. Sabi niya, ‘Okay ka ba to do this ‘Paubaya’?’ Napakinggan ko yung kanta. Sabi ko, ‘Ang ganda nito ah. Parang saktong sakto masyado sa amin,’” he added.
(It was Moira who asked me. She said, “Are you okay to do this ‘Paubaya’ [music video]?” I listened to the song. I said, “This is so good. It seems so fitting for us.”)
Garcia confirmed too that he and Barretto had a hand in the script along with Dela Torre and Hernandez.
“May script siya, siyempre may guide kung hanggang saan lang kayo. Pero iyong sasabihin as an actor, kung saan ka komportable siyempre, kung saan mo mararamdaman,” he explained.
(There is a script of course, to guide you where to go. But what you will say as an actor [was written based on] where you are comfortable, what you feel.)
Chiu then asked him why he apologized to Barretto in the music video, but Garcia avoided answering the question.
The video, which premiered on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, remains the top trending video on YouTube in the Philippines and has nearly 19 million views as of writing. JB
