Renowned Japanese film company Studio Ghibli has released the English-dubbed trailer for its first-ever 3D feature, titled “Earwig and the Witch.”

Deviating from the studio’s usual 2D hits such as “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” among many others, the upcoming movie will be Studio Ghibli’s first attempt at bringing their stories to life using computer-generated imagery (CGI).

“Earwig and the Witch” tells the story of a British orphan named Earwig as she discovers the world of magic after getting adopted by a witch.

The film was directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. “Earwig and the Witch” will be released in Japan on Dec. 30, while North American viewers can expect the film to drop in early 2021.

“Growing up in an orphanage in the British countryside, Earwig has no idea that her mother had magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch,” the synopsis reads.

“As the headstrong young girl sets out to uncover the secrets of her new guardians, she discovers a world of spells and potions, and a mysterious song that may be the key to finding the family she has always wanted,” it adds.

The English-dubbed trailer was released on YouTube yesterday, Dec. 23, by GKIDS Films, the studio responsible for distributing Studio Ghibli movies in North America.  /ra
