Imelda Marcos has drawn attention online after the character Princess Margaret, played by Helena Bonham-Carter, mentioned the wife of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in “The Crown” season 4.
The third episode of the latest season of the hit series sees the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II tell the story of her encounter with Imelda Marcos, whom the real-life princess actually met before.
“In Manila, in the middle of a state banquet, who barges into the room? None other than Imelda Marcos,” Princess Margaret tells a crowd of royals as she holds a cigarette in one hand.
“She makes a beeline, straight for me, saying she’s desperate to show me her… wait for it,” Princess Margaret shares before getting interrupted by Princess Anne, played by Erin Doherty, who answers “shoe collection.”
“Shell collection,” corrects Princess Margaret.
“Are you sure? She was probably trying to say ‘shoe,’ and you misunderstood her,” asks Prince Philipp, who was played by Tobias Menzies.
“Did she have something in her teeth?” jests the Queen herself, played by Olivia Colman, as the crowd begins to giggle and laugh.
The clip of the scene has been shared and talked about thousands of times on Twitter, causing “Imelda Marcos” to go trending on the said site since yesterday, Nov. 15.
“Not the royal family, mainly Princess Margaret, making fun of Imelda Marcos’ fake English accent,” one Twitter user @dl02_ jested in a tweet, which has been retweeted over 3,800 times and liked by around 19,800 users, as of this writing.

“Christ, this is hilarious but also I want you all to know that Imelda Marcos could probably have fed everyone in Manila for half a decade with the government taxes she used to buy her godd*mned shoe collection,” Twitter user @contraststudies meanwhile stated in the retweet of the viral clip.

The former first lady was found guilty of seven counts of graft back in 2018. She violated R. A. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, according to Sandiganbayan’s Fifth Division.
Imelda Marcos was found to have transferred around $200 million to seven Swiss foundations during her term as a member of the defunct Batasang Pambansa, as Metro Manila Governor, and as then Minister of Human Settlements.
“Helena Bonham Carter making fun of Imelda Marcos is perfect! [Ok emoji] Imelda met Princess Margaret back in 1980. Simply hilarious,” Twitter user @anjiolinanakaya meanwhile posted, re-sharing a clip of the scene as well.

While the said scene in “The Crown” is only a fictional reenactment, Princess Margaret did officially visit the country in 1980 and met the then-first lady in person. JB
