Go explained that in August 2017,  she flew back to the Philippines from New York City to visit her family. At the time, the two were already dating and Spies was set to follow and meet Go’s loved ones.

FEATURED STORIES

Prior to flying to the Philippines, Spies already planned to propose to her, but originally intended to pop the big question in London sometime after their trip. However, one of his friends convinced him to propose during the trip since he would be there with her family.

Spies agreed and quickly began preparing the whole proposal, from the ring to the venue, before his flight. He noted that it was a team effort to pull off the surprise, especially to have the engagement ring made. Spies enlisted the help of one of Go’s friends to find out what type of ring she liked and later had it made by his other friend.

Once the ring was ready, he booked a special dinner for them in Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa during their trip. With the venue and the ring prepared, Spies flew out to join Go and her family in the Philippines to celebrate her birthday on Aug. 31.

Upon his arrival, Go admitted that she was already hoping that Spies would propose to her during their trip.

“Because he’s there with my family already, I feel like it’s the perfect time, it’s the perfect place for him to do that,” she said.

Days after her birthday, the couple went to Boracay with Go’s family and Spies eventually asked for her parent’s blessing prior to the proposal.

“The funniest time, every morning they were building a tent for special events. Every morning, they were preparing something, and I felt like, ‘Is this for me? Maybe Martin’s proposing to me,” Go stated.

However, when they reached the last day of their stay on the island Go eventually let go of her expectations. On the same day, Spies began to put his plan in motion and invited Go to an intimate dinner on the beach in the said hotel.

As Go relaxed and enjoyed the view of their dinner, Spies mustered up the courage to propose. When he eventually got her to stand at a certain spot and watch the sunset, Spies asked her: “Do you want to spend the rest of our days together?”

He then knelt down on one knee, showed her the ring and popped the big question. Upon seeing the ring, Go began to cry and hugged Spies while saying yes.

“It was all massive relief and joy and happiness after that,” he recalled.

Following the proposal, the two planned their wedding while Go started starring in the London production of “Hamilton” and Spies had to continue work in New York City. Despite living in different countries at the time, they eventually tied the knot in Boracay on April 18, 2018, in the company of their loved ones.

As to why Go quickly said yes to Spies’ proposal, she said: “I was at peace. And I still am.”

The couple first met in New York City, and are now living together in London.  /ra
