Philippine idol girl group MNL48 will continue as a 36-member group for its upcoming “Third Generation” of artists, HalloHallo Entertainment (HHE) president Paulo Kurosawa announced yesterday, Sept. 30.
Kurosawa in the statement noted that the girls “have been able to rise above the challenges” brought about by the pandemic, although the major decision was made for them “to be able to concentrate on each member.”
“Moving forward, we will see more subunits and independent projects as we focus on the members’ talents and skills,” he shared. The HHE president also assured fans of the girl group that the change is only temporary.
“Despite this change, MNL48 is here to stay and we are excited for what’s in store for the group,” Kurosawa said.
He then disclosed that MNL48’s sixth single, “River,” and its music video will be released soon, while fans can expect a digital concert series in the coming months.
Despite the cancellation of shows due to COVID-19, MNL48 has been holding online events on Kumu and YouTube, including its virtual handshake event and the launch of the group’s first subunit, Baby Blue.
“MNL48 has shown resilience during this difficult time and will continue to bring joy, music and entertainment to the fans,” Kurosawa said.
MNL48 was originally an “all-girl sing-and-dance group, [aged] 15 [to] 20 years old (average age of 16.69) with 48 members and 13 trainees,” according to its website. It is the Philippine chapter of the famous J-pop idol AKB48, which has other sister groups all over Asia. /ra
