Regine Velasquez fulfilled the dream of one health worker who wanted to have a duet with her by singing with him through a video call yesterday, April 19.
The performance came after a photo of the nurse, one Gerry John Cumpio, asking the public to stay home amid the COVID-19 pandemic, circulated online on April 2. The picture was posted by his colleague, Wendel Estrabo on Facebook on the same day.
While wearing personal protective equipment, Cumpio held a piece of paper advising people to stay indoors, stating that he still dreamed of having a duet with Velasquez. Estrabo also held a similar sign which said he wanted to sing with Lea Salonga.
Days after, Cumpio was featured on the noontime variety show “ASAP Natin ‘To”, as seen in a clip posted on Estrabo’s page yesterday. Cumpio said he has been a longtime fan of Asia’s Songbird and that he would listen to her songs as a stress reliever after work.
Velasquez then talked to him through a video call, where she thanked him and his fellow frontliners for their service amid the health crisis. The singer also noted how his wish of singing with her was “small” compared to what he has done for others during the pandemic.
After their short chat, Velasquez and Cumpio belted out the singer’s hit song “Ikaw”.
Velasquez later spoke about their duet on her Instagram page, saying that it was an honor for her to hear their voices sing together despite not seeing Cumpio in person.
“Maraming salamat Gerry hindi lang sa [dedikasyon] at sakripisyo na ibinibigay mo sa ating bansa, salamat din sa pag awit kasama ko,” she said while complimenting his singing.

The duet was part of Velasquez’s birthday performance on the variety show last Sunday. Velasquez will be turning a year older on Wednesday, April 22. JB
