Moira Dela Torre has been tapped to sing a local version of the classic Disney song “Reflection” for the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Mulan”, and she describes this opportunity as “a full-circle moment.”
Walt Disney announced yesterday that Dela Torre, whom they described as “a warrior in her own right,” will be lending her voice to sing “Reflection”.
The singer-songwriter expressed her gratitude for being chosen to make her own rendition of the song, which turns out to be the very first piece she sang in public when she was a kid.
“This is the very definition of a [full-circle] moment,” she said on Instagram yesterday, March 11. “When I was a young girl, the first song I ever got to sing on my own in front of an audience was ‘Reflection’ from Disney’s ‘Mulan’.”
“And now, almost 18 years later, I get to sing it in front of the world,” the singer added.
Lea Salonga originally sang “Reflection” for the animated film “Mulan” back in 1998, while Christina Aguilera sang the studio version in the same year.
“I can’t even begin to describe how honored I feel to have been chosen to sing my own rendition of ‘Reflection’, not just because it’s one of the most beloved Disney songs, but because of how meaningful it has been in my life as an artist,” Dela Torre noted.
“The song talks about doubting yourself; about the weak knees that come when you don’t feel capable of doing something great – something I find very relatable for a lot of us,” she added.
Dela Torre admitted that throughout her “once-in-a-lifetime experience” of giving her personal touch to the iconic song, she had fears and self-doubt as she thought she “wouldn’t be able to measure up” to the previous renditions.
“The thought of having to fill such big shoes was very scary to me until I realized that I was chosen so I could pave my own path,” she said.
Although there is still no definite date yet, Dela Torre said both the song and its music video “will be coming out very, very soon.” The “Mulan” remake meanwhile is set to hit the big screen on March 25. JB
