Television host Kim Atienza and his fellow motorcycle riders have banded together to raise money to donate to the victims of Taal Volcano’s eruption last week.
Atienza, an avid motorcycling enthusiast, said they were able to raise a total of P28,000 during their “#escoltambay” session last Saturday, Jan. 18, which he posted on Instagram on the same day.
“What a meaningful morning!” he said. “Riders from different ride clubs bowed and prayed and passed the helmet for Taal in this morning’s #escoltambay.”
“Maraming maraming salamat (thank you very much) brother riders. May God be with us every single minute on the road,” he added.
The TV host’s post came with snippets of the gathering, which included a clip of Atienza leading the group in prayer. He thanked God for their “motorcycle lifestyle” and asked for the protection of thousands of displaced families affected by the eruption.
The group of riders then proceeded to pass around a helmet where they put their donations. Atienza started by putting in P5,000, a video posted by YouTube channel Classic Rider Stories on the same day showed.
“In [view] of the volcanic eruption of [Taal], Escoltambay would like to sincerely say our appreciation of your extended hand to give back your blessings to those in need,” the video’s description read. “With the initiative of Kuya Kim Atienza, [these] deeds came to reality!”
Taal Volcano had a phreatic or steam-driven eruption on Jan. 12, rendering around 26,000 families displaced. The volcano is still spewing ash and steam through “infrequent weak explosions,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said earlier today, Jan. 20. JB
