Edward Barber admitted that he initially did not want to accept the role of Iking in the fantasy TV series “Hiwaga ng Kambat” because of its requirements.

Barber recalled how his love-team partner Maymay Entrata convinced him to challenge himself as an actor through the character in an episode of the talk show “Magandang Buhay” which aired on Tuesday, July 16.

“I am a very anxious person, I always get stressed when there is a big challenge,” Barber said. “Halimbawa, yung ‘Hiwaga ng Kambat’, as in halos ayaw kong tanggapin yung project kasi… parang first time ko na pure Tagalog lines, first time ko na may prosthetics ako, may fight scenes na ganyan, pero… she really pushed me to take the role.”

(For example, “Hiwaga ng Kambat”, I did not want to accept the project because it was my first time to [speak] pure Tagalog lines, it was my first time to wear prosthetics, to have fight scenes, but she really pushed me to take the role.)

Barber explained that Entrata encouraged him to take the role as a way to boost his acting career.

“‘Challenge mo talaga yung sarili mo kasi walang mangyayari kung walang stress… pressure makes diamonds,’ sinabi niya,” he said.

(“Challenge yourself because nothing will happen without stress, pressure makes diamonds,” she said.)

Barber stated that Entrata helped him realize that he can overcome challenges through faith.

“Because of her, she made me realize that whatever the challenge is, even if she is not there, kaya ko (I can do it) as long as I have my faith there with it. I am really happy to have her,” Barber said.

“Hiwaga ng Kambat” airs every Sunday on ABS-CBN. Hannah Mallorca/NVG
