Tom Holland has been Spider-Man since 2015, but he is up for sharing the screen with actors who have played the web-slinging superhero, even if they are from a different studio.
Holland was in an interview with American entertainment reporter Jake Hamilton when the topic of a Spider-Man multiverse was broached. In the interview posted on YouTube on June 19, Hamilton asked if there was a chance that previous Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would appear in a movie with Holland.
The usually chatty actor known for dropping spoilers suddenly turned silent at the topic, turning to his castmates Zendaya and Jacob Batalon for an answer.
Finally, he relented and shared his thoughts about the concept. “It would be amazing. It would be really, really cool, and it’s something that the fans really want,” he said.
“So, whether Marvel and Sony decided to do that, it’s up to them. It’s not up to me. I can’t walk in like, ‘Kevin [Feige], this is what we’re doing on the next one!’ But it would be really awesome.”
The character of Spider-Man is shared by Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios and Disney, as Marvel sold licenses to other studios before Marvel Studios created the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This is why Sony Pictures has a Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire from 2002 to 2007 and a reboot called “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012 and 2014 starring Andrew Garfield.
Since then, former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal struck a deal with Marvel Studios to share Spider-Man. This brought another reboot to life in the form of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” starring Tom Holland. The film was financed and distributed by Sony Pictures, while Marvel Studios produced the film and was in charge of its creative direction.
Given this joint custody of Spider-Man, could there be a Spider-Man multiverse in the MCU? Pascal told Italian news site badtaste.it via comicbook.com on June 20, “Everything is possible.” She said she was a fan of Oscar-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which showed Spider-Man heroes from parallel universes coming together.
