“Rated K” host Korina Sanchez paid homage to veteran actor Eddie Garcia, who was recently placed on “do not resuscitate” status by his family.
For Sanchez, furniture is what comes to mind when she thinks of the 90-year-old Garcia.
“You know, it’s just there forever. Essential, but underrated. Often used, and as often taken for granted,” Sanchez said via Instagram on June 15. “But when you stop and think about this man’s life and times, wow, what a run. They surely don’t make them like they used to.”
Garcia was shooting for a GMA Network TV series when he tripped and suffered a neck injury last June 8. At his age, Sanchez said the nonagenarian probably did not think he would still be carrying a machine gun, wearing fatigue and running around on set.
But Garcia’s age seemed to be the farthest thing from his mind and said once that retirement was not in his vocabulary.
“Isn’t this stuff that fantasies are dreamt of by so many?” said Sanchez. “Falling on where you first sprouted and doing last what you do best and love most.”
She added her regret lies in her failure to follow through with an interview with Garcia: “We asked for an interview with him recently, but I was abroad and he wanted me to do his interview. A regret, I didn’t follow through. I pray for Manoy Eddie’s recovery.”
In the end, Sanchez thanked the veteran actor, who she said has gone above and beyond the quota in his contributions to pop culture and the Philippine film industry.
“I’d like now to thank him. For his contributions to film and pop culture, the memories, his humor never taking anything too seriously including himself, the foundation and just the fun of having him around,” said Sanchez. “Quota sya. Sobra sobra pa (he has reached the quota, even went beyond it).” JB
