Angeline not blaming Regine for her ouster as ‘Asap’ regular

Since winning the talent search “Star Power” in 2011, Angeline Quinto had been a fixture in the noontime variety show “Asap.”

However, the weekly program underwent a format overhaul last year, which meant that some singers—including Angeline—would no longer get to perform on a regular basis. She was distraught when she first learned about the changes.

“I didn’t appear in the show for about three months. I thought I would never get to perform in ‘Asap’ again and that made me really sad,” she told reporters at a recent press conference for “Angeline K ’To, Concert Namin ’To,” her upcoming show with K Brosas.

“I was crying almost every day,” the 29-year-old recording artist admitted. “I wasn’t used to doing nothing during Sundays.”

The reality hit her one Sunday morning, she said, when her adoptive mother, Mama Bob, asked her a rather innocuous question: “Wala ka na sa ‘Asap?’”

“It hurt … I had to come up with an excuse. I told her that I had to go get something upstairs. And there I just cried,” she related.

And despite some observers claiming that Regine Velasquez’s transfer to the Kapamilya network was to blame for what happened, Angeline stressed that there’s no truth to such rumors.

“It’s not because of her … I don’t believe that,” she stressed. “They just have been wanting to try new things; the production will, of course, also change.”

She eventually came to accept the unexpected turn, especially after the network management explained the reason behind “Asap’s” reconfiguration into “Asap Natin ’To,” which now focuses on celebrating “stories of hope, love and inspiration from Kapamilyas all over the world.”

But while she has been appearing in the show more often of late, she has no definite schedule. “I’m thankful… But I don’t expect anything after; I don’t want to get my hopes up. I just wait and see if I get a message, informing me if I have a guest appearance in a particular week,” she said.

What happened, she pointed out, reminded her of the fact that, in show biz, no one is indispensable. “You realize that you don’t really know how long you will last here. Those thoughts played in my head,” she related.

Luckily, offers outside television continue to pour in. “I do a lot of corporate and out-of-town shows. We also have coming tours in the United States and Canada… I’m looking forward to those,” said Angeline, who also hopes to build her online presence via YouTube.

“I want to shoot more content for my page, perhaps videos of my performances,” she said.

Mounted by Cornerstone Concerts, “Angeline K ’To,” which will be held on July 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum (call 9115555), will be a night of music and laughter.

“When I learned that I was doing this show with K, I got excited because I know it’s going to be fun. My past concerts have mostly been straightforward. This is something new for me,” she said. “Sometimes, I catch myself smiling when I remember all the ideas we talked about in our meetings. And that’s what I want the fans to get out of the concert.”

Angeline also expects K to help her bring out her candid side. “I’m also kalog, fun-loving. I want the crowd to see that aside from my singing,” she said.
