Though Adam Levine exited “The Voice” with a heartwarming message on Instagram, there may have been signs that he was unhappy with the show.

The Maroon 5 frontman appeared during an NBC Upfronts presentation last May 13 in New York along with fellow judges from “The Voice”. The annual Upfronts showcases the returning and new programs of the network to advertisers.

During his performance, Levine appeared bored as he stood to the side while Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton worked the crowd.

NBC Entertainment co-chair Paul Telegdy was “embarrassed” and “furious” at Levine’s attitude, sources told TVLine via Page Six on Friday, May 24.

A source said Telegdy called for Levine to be fired, but others say executives were pleased with the coaches for performing amid a week of taping live shows.

What could have affected Levine’s mood? The day before, on May 12, the show’s season 16 semi-finals was being pre-taped. Levine reportedly did not want to be there because he no longer had singers on his team, a source told TVLine on Friday, May 24.

The “Payphone” singer was said to be “very difficult” and did not want to give commentary to the performers of other coaches.

A change in the rules this season left Levine without a single member on his team. The live Cross Battles was introduced, where two singers from different teams competed against each other and American viewers voted the winner.

Previously, Knockout rounds were used to determine the best singer per team. In this format, singers from the same team battled it out and the coach chose the winner.

Just last May 10, Levine was even confirmed for season 17. However, his exit was announced on May 24 by Carson Daly on the show “Today”. Niña V. Guno/JB
