Comedian-actor Vice Ganda paid homage to his mother Rosario while on their way home from their trip to Canada and the United States.

Vice Gandy took to social media where he shared a photo of his mom sitting in business class on their flight home. The comedian took the moment to reminisce about his childhood, back when he and his mother used to ride the humble tricycle and jeepney.

Tuwing sasakay kami ng tricycle o ng jeep lagi nya akong kinakandong. Yun ay para isa lang ang bayad. Kasi nga kapos sa pera,” said Vice Ganda via Instagran on May 21. “Mainit, masikip at masakit sa binti. Kawawa. Pero tinitiis nya yun. Pero masaya din naman siguro sya kasi nakayakap lang sya sa bunso nyang si Tutoy habang bumabyahe.”

(Every time we rode the tricycle or jeep, she would always make me sit on her lap so she would only pay fare for one person. This is because we were short of money. It was hot, cramped and painful on the legs. Pitiful. But she endured all that. I suppose she was happy anyway because she got to hug her youngest son Tutoy when traveling).

Vice Ganda said he knew since he was young that their life was not easy and this was what pushed him to work hard and make sacrifices. No opportunities were spared, he said, as he did not let any chances to earn and save money slip by.

These days, the comedian lives comfortably and spoils his mother, who now gets to ride business class whenever they travel.

“Kaya naman ngayon na nakakaluwag luwag na ko naka BUSINESS CLASS na sya,” he said. “Gumastos man ako ng malaki sisiguraduhin kong komportable ang Nanay ko. Walang ngalay. Walang ngawit. Walang init.”

(Now that I am comfortably off, she gets to ride business class. Even if I spend a lot of money, I want to make sure my mother is comfortable. No numbness or tiredness. No heat.)

He also said he would spend his last cent on his mother, vowing her days of suffering are over: “Tapos na ang mga panahon ng pagdurusa nya. Isinusumpa ko tatanda syang maginhawa (Her days of suffering are over. I promise she will grow old comfortably).”

Vice Ganda’s post came days after he drew flak on social media for posting a tweet about shopping last May 18. Vice Ganda, then, pointed out how social media as a mess and said he’d rather go shopping instead—a remark some netizens said reeked of privilege.

The comedian has since defended himself, saying shopping does not mean being privileged, and called out the netizens as “feeling woke.”  /ra
