MANILA, Philippines — Grammy-nominated singer Lea Salonga is set to return to the Broadway revival of “Once on This Island” on December 27.
The Tony-award winning actress announced the news in an Instagram post on Thursday captioned: “Yes, this is happening!!! I get to close this Tony-winning and Grammy-nominated jewel of a musical!!!”
Salonga, who originated the role of goddess Erzulie in this production, will play from December 27 until its final performance on January 6, 2019 at the Circle in the Square Theatre, New York City. She exited the musical in June 2018.
She will replace Cassondra James who, in turn, has just replaced Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams in the role.
“Once on This Island,” directed by Michael Arden and choreographed by Camille Brown, bagged the Best Revival of a Musical at the 2018 Tony Awards.
Meanwhile, Salonga was named as Best Featured Actress in a Musical in Broadway’s Theater Fans’ Choice Awards for her role as Erzulie.
She recently received her first Grammy nomination alongside other cast of “Once on This Island” under the Best Musical Theater Album category.
Based on the novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy, “Once on This Island” is written by Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music). /cbb
