JM De Guzman opens up on father’s role in his recovery from drug abuse
MANILA, Philippines — Actor JM De Guzman has gotten personal and opened up on how his father helped him recover from his drug abuse.
On television, De Guzman narrated how he told his grandfather about his plan to undergo rehabilitation, admitting he was afraid of his father Ronniel.
“‘Yung first actually, ako na ‘yung nagsabi sa lolo since takot nga ako kay daddy that time dahil nag-aaway na kami dahil nga sa sitwasyon ko,” De Guzman said in an episode of “Magandang Buhay” aired Thursday.
The 30-year-old actor added: “Kaya sabi ko sa lolo ko, ‘Lolo, kailangan kong magpahinga, hanapan mo ko ng rehab, ‘yung aircon ha’.”
However, De Guzman said his father did not approve of this. He recounted, “Sabi ng daddy, ‘Hindi, ako ang aayos sa kanya.’ Nagulat ako meron na pala siyang plano talaga for me.”

Now that he has recovered, De Guzman vowed to prove to his father how he has already changed.
“To show him na ‘yung disposition ko maganda, na naka-lock yung focus ko dun sa gusto kong mangyari sa buhay ko, goals ko,” he noted.
He added: “Kahit hindi ko na sabihin sa kanya, basta ‘pag nakikita niya ako, mararamdaman niya na nandun ako at hindi na ako kakalas doon. Para alam niya na may napuntuhan ‘yung sakripisyo niya and ‘yung love niya sa akin.”
De Guzman graduated from the Self Enhancement for Life Foundation (SELF) rehabilitation program in July 2018 after struggling from drug addiction.
He successfully bounced back after having a two-year hiatus in show business with projects like “Araw Gabi,” “Kung Paano Siya Nawala,” an upcoming movie, and a forthcoming soap. /kga
