American comedian and TV host Conan O’Brien decided to blend in during his Japan trip by putting on some “kawaii” Harajuku fashion.
O’Brien started the trip with a stroll down Japan’s fashionable Harajuku street while wearing what is considered “kawaii,” or cute fashion. The host had his hair done in blue and added some colorful extensions while wearing makeup. He also wore a relatively colorful outfit to match.
Aaron Bleyaert, who plays with O’Brien during a show segment called “Clueless Gamer,” tweeted a selfie on Sept. 3, which showed off the host’s new look.
A live video of O’Brien’s brief stroll would also be streamed on the same day on the Conan O’Brien Presents: Team Coco Facebook page.
At some point in the stream, Harajuku fashion icons Miochin, Sebastian Masuda and Kanata would show up to accompany O’Brien. They would later proceed to Kawaii Monster Cafe, which Masuda designed. The themed restaurant is inspired by the Japanese kawaii fashion trend, which is often credited to Masuda for starting it in the 1990s. Masuda also owns kawaii fashion store 6%DOKIDOKI, reports SoraNews24.

Meanwhile, Miochin is an artist who loves kawaii fashion and happens to be one of the most knowledgable on where to find the best second-hand stores. Kanata is a fashionista from 6%DOKIDOKI.
O’Brien’s Japan trip was partly due to a challenge by the mayor of Hokuei Town, also known as “Conan Town” after the famous manga character Detective Conan.
Mayor Akio Matsumoto said in English on a Facebook video addressed to O’Brien, and posted around Aug. 21, that he would make O’Brien’s demands come true if he came to Japan. In return, Matsumoto also laid out his own demands.
O’Brien previously demanded three trillion yen for appropriating his given name, have a building named after him, and change the hairstyle of the Detective Conan statue to mirror his own.
Mayor Matsumoto then demanded to have his face carved beside President Lincoln on mount Rushmore, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and 15,000 American hamburgers.
The demands from both parties are quite farfetched, so it would be interesting how they would compromise when O’Brien and Matsumoto finally meet face to face. /ra
