Nobody’s perfect. Even celebrities, who have all the access to the best practitioners in the beauty and health industry, are still human too and have their own fair share of flaws and insecurities. But while normal people may have the luxury of privacy, celebrities don’t seem to have as much. Their profession compels them to live their lives under the spotlight, making them more exposed to criticism and bashers.
Actress Iza Calzado has been around in the entertainment industry since the 1990s. It seems time long enough for her to now be comfortable in her own skin despite the glare of the spotlight, and at the same time, be wise enough to know how to deal with critics — most especially when her body is concerned.
Calzado took to her Instagram account last Aug. 28 to share to fans a picture of her at Batangas. In her post, she can be seen wearing a blush pink bikini while standing beside a pool. The picture was taken at The Farm at San Benito, in Batangas.
“Grateful heart,” wrote Calzado. “Thank you for spoiling me today my @thefarmatsanbenito family. #thebodyloverevolution.”
Calzado never fails in spreading positivity on her social media, and so when one basher said something rude about her body, Calzado took the high road instead of lashing back.
A certain netizen pointed out that Calzado looks as if she’s given birth to many kids: “May mga chubby naman na firm yung katawan at di masagwang tingnan lalo pag naka-bikini.”
“Di lang siguro ako sanay makakita ng ganyan. Ganda ng mukha pero lawlaw na lawlaw ang katawan to think dipa nagkakaanak,” the commenter added.
Calzado’s fans called out the netizen for the rudeness. Today, the netizen’s comment has since been edited and changed to a more positive, “That’s a real woman’s body.”
Calzado wrote a reply to the netizen, however, before the comment was edited. In Calzado’s response, she told the netizen that she understands where they’re coming from.
“Hirap naman talaga maintindihan from your end bakit hindi normal yung body ko (It would really be hard to understand from your end why my body isn’t normal). I wish I could say I was merely chubby but truth is I was obese,” shared Calzado. “I have lost 100 lbs (or more) 14 inches from my waist and if you think about it that’s probably like I had twins or gave birth several times.”
Calzado added that perhaps there are just some people who, despite gaining weight, have skin that remains tight.
“I am not one of them,” Calzado continued to say. “Trust me, not a day goes by na hindi ko inasam magkaroon ng mas magandang balat (Trust me, not a day goes by that I didn’t wish I had beautiful skin).
Calzado, however, realized that there’s nothing much she can do, so she instead focuses on accepting and celebrating what she’s been blessed with.
“May magagawa pa ba ako? Wala na. (Is there anything else I can do? Nothing.) So ang (the) best thing to do is accept what I have and celebrate the things I have been blessed with, including a healthy body, no matter the size or shape or skin texture.”
Calzado, too, apologized to the netizen for being bashed back for the remark: “I am also sorry that you were attacked for your comments. I know you did not mean to hurt me. Love and Light to you.”
Meanwhile, many others seemed to think differently when it came to Calzado’s bikini picture. Veteran actress Claudine Barretto commented on her photo, saying, “Sexy ng baby sis ko.”
Actresses Janine Gutierrez and Danice Sotto, meanwhile, sent some love Calzado’s way. Gutierrez, too, remarked that Calzado was the “hottest.”
This isn’t the first incident Calzado has dealt with body-shamers with the same approach. In the past, she has faced body-shaming comments not with spite but by choosing positivity and spreading body love to her fans. Calzado continues to stay true to herself and radiates only what is inside: self-love and compassion — a woman who knows her worth. JB
