Children before marriage for Joshua Garcia?

First comes love, second comes babies — at least, it seems, for Joshua Garcia.

The actor, who turns 21 this October, shared his views on marriage and family while on TFC Kapamilya Live last Aug. 22.

The segment was captured in a Facebook post of one Piolo Azkal.

During the show, host KaladKaren Davila asked what age he wanted to get married. Garcia appeared to be deep in thought until finally, he said, “27.”

Shocked reactions could be heard in the background, prompting Kaladkaren to note, “Six years pa.”

Then Garcia clarified his statement. “Actually, ano, 27 gusto kong magka-anak tapos 30 plus gusto ko magpakasal.”

(Actually, I want to have a child by 27 and get married in my 30s.)

He explained, “Ganon talaga ‘pag probinsya. Ang hirap din sabihin — Kasi hindi mo kasi masasabi kasi bigla na lang kasi siyang nabubuo ‘yung mga babies.”

(It’s like that in the province. It’s hard to say — you can’t tell because all of a sudden babies are conceived.)

The Batangueño added that being prepared for a child is important. “Pero mas maganda na kapag nag-baby ka, may trabaho ka na regular tsaka nakaipon ka na. May business ka na, may bahay ka na, kumbaga kumpleto na.”

(It would be better that when you have a baby, you have a regular job and you have saved. You have a business, a house, you’re already complete.)

Though the concept may shock some with traditional family values, his views on having children before marriage is nothing new in industrialized nations. For example, in Norway, most children’s parents tie the knot years after they are born.

Last July on “Tonight with Boy Abunda”, Garcia said yes when asked if he would marry love team partner Julia Barretto eight to ten years from now. Barretto has yet to give her say about Garcia’s statement. Niña V. Guno/JB
