Kris Aquino was recently praised by a tax expert for her consistency in paying taxes. In response, the Queen of All Media said she’s not “crazy rich” and that she won’t ever be a “corrupt, lazy, money grabbing Asian” should she ever engage in politics.
“You may hate her guts but @krisaquino is paying her taxes!” wrote former Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) tax examiner Mon Abrea in an Instagram post last Thursday, Aug. 23. “Among the affluent and influential families in the Philippines, she’s the only consistent individual top taxpayer.”
Sharing photos of Aquino’s rank as BIR’s top individual taxpayer as well as Aquino’s scene in the movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” Abrea also called out Aquino’s bashers: “So to all bashers and haters, make sure you’re paying taxes before you say a word. At least, Kris is among the #CrazyRichAsians not one of the #CorruptRichAsians.”
Aquino, of course, learned about Abrea’s remarks soon after.
“Just to be prudent- I religiously pay my taxes-because it is part of my Catholic, bible based faith,” she commented. She said that her mother, former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino, legally emancipated her at the age of 15. Aquino recounted that since then, she managed her finances, paying for her tuition and handling her allowance from college onwards.
“P.S. I also know wealth is relative — but I’m at a very far distance from being ‘crazy rich,'” noted Aquino. She stated she would always remind her sons that while she was the daughter of a Cojuangco, their grandfather, Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., was resolute in his decision to raise his children to become financially independent. She also added that her mother taught her and her siblings the values of consistent hard work and generosity when it comes to sharing one’s blessings.
But Aquino admitted that unlike her siblings who are low maintenance, she has a weakness for material things. “My sisters and brother are low maintenance — I work as hard as I do because of my sons and because we love [to] travel. But let’s be honest- I have a weakness for nice clothes, makeup, shoes and watches- so I make sure to have an investment fund for our expansion.”
“You have my solemn [word],” said Aquino. “I have worked for more than 30 years, and no way will I ever became a (corrupt, lazy, money grabbing Asian) if and when politics is part of my [destiny].” JB
