Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson joined the trend when she wore a dress made by designer Ulysses King, earning her praise as well as criticism from netizens.
Uson kept her SONA 2018 look simple, as seen in the Facebook photo she posted yesterday, July 23.
The unadorned PCOO Asec wore a black see-through Baron-inspired dress with details of “gumamela” (hibiscus) embroidery which she matched with an off-white neoprene bustier and capri pants. Uson also kept her hair and makeup simple, opting for a nude lipstick to complete her look.
In another post, Uson shared the details of her dress after thanking King for dressing her up.
“Gusto ko lamang pong pasalamatan si Ulysses King na naglakas loob na bihisan po ang isang katulad ko,” wrote Uson. “Kahit kaliwa’t kanan ang batikos na natanggap niya nang malaman ng ilan niyang mga kaibigan na isang ‘mocha uson’ lamang ang bibihisan niya sa SONA.”
(I would like to thank Ulysses King who had the guts to dress up someone like me. Even if he has been hit right and left by criticisms when his other friends found out that he is only dressing up a certain “Mocha Uson” for the SONA.)
Naturally, netizens were quick to react on the PCOO Asec’s outfit. Uson’s fans praised her simplicity.

Some fans commented their own interpretations for Uson’s outfit. They seemed to agree that the black see-through dress symbolizes people’s negative view of her, while her off-white top and pants represent the goodness of her heart.

One fan commented that Uson’s outfit made her look like a “virgin.” Another went as far as to say that Uson is the modern-day symbol for “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo’s” Maria Clara.

Some, on the other hand, think Uson does not symbolize a chaste character — rather, that she represents a modern-day Filipino heroine.

Meanwhile, some were vocal about their dislike for Uson’s outfit. They advised that she hire a different designer and that the outfit would have looked better if the black dress wasn’t sheer.

One quipped that she was ready for dengue season: “Nakapantalon ka nanakakulambo pa, di ka namadengge nyan (You’re wearing pants and a mosquito net, you won’t contract dengue).”

Some netizens criticized Uson’s makeup. While some felt it dampened her beauty, another commented that her thick makeup doesn’t equate well with her allegedly “flimsy” character.

One netizen, San Juan Zernan, pointed out that Uson’s outfit was decent. However, he also noted that it was still “jologs (tacky).”

Uson was recently criticized by Ogie Diaz for allowing social media personality Andrew “Drew” Olivar to use her social media platform to insult actress Cynthia Patag. Both Uson and Olivar have yet to comment or issue an official statement on the matter, as of this writing. NVG
