Matteo Guidicelli called for a ban on straws after a news item revealed Starbucks’ new cup design to phase out the need for straws.

“We should ban straws. If they don’t, we should stop using them. Let’s take the first step. No more plastic straws,” he said.

He noted: “It’s all gotta start our own small way.”

He also posted a picture of the metal tumbler and metal cup he uses to drink his water and coffee.

Another Twitter user @qtmeeh11 said that in the town of Sto. Tomas, Batangas, a ban on straws has been in place “for almost 6 years.”

“That’s awesome!” commended Guidicelli.

In 2012, Sto. Tomas enacted Municipal Ordinance no. 2011-05, which prohibits establishments from using plastic on dry goods and from using styrofoam, according to a June 2012 report in the Batangas local newspaper The Filipino Connection. Selling of plastic cups and straws by individuals and establishments is also illegal in the town.

Guidicelli has been advocating for cleaning the oceans of plastic pollution. He was one of the artists who performed in a benefit concert to promote a shore cleanup during the Labor Day weekend in La Union.
