Netflix saves ‘Lucifer’ after April cancellation

Nixed by Fox, season four of fantastical crime drama “Lucifer” has now been picked up by Netflix.

With a lead character who is literally the lord of Hell, Warner Bros’ “Lucifer” has been saved from damnation by Fox Broadcasting thanks to online streaming specialist Netflix.

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Lucifer walks the streets of Los Angeles as a supernaturally persuasive nightclub owner and, after an encounter with a police detective who is somehow immune to his infernal charms, a civilian consultant to the LAPD.

Despite finding its feet with critics after a rocky first season, US viewership numbers continued to decline from a season one average of over 7 million, dipping below 3 million for the first time during season three.

Fox announced the show’s cancellation even before broadcasting its final three episodes in May 2018, and fans took to social media to petition for a second chance.

Co-showrunner Joe Henderson continued to rally support for Season 4 in his response. “Thank you thank you THANK YOU to all the #Lucifer fans,” he wrote on Twitter. “You brought us back. YOU did this.”

Welsh-born Tom Ellis features as Lucifer Morningstar opposite Lauren German of “Chicago Fire” as Chloe Decker.

D.B. Woodside (“24”), Kevin Alejandro (“Arrow”, “Southland”), Aimee Garcia (“Dexter”), Lesley-Ann Brandt, and Rachael Harris (“Suits”) are among the show’s other stars.

NBC recently picked up police comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” after a similar cancellation the day before Fox gave “Lucifer” the chop. CC
