NEW YORK (AP) — Seth Meyers says his new son was born in the lobby of their apartment building.
The “Late Night with Seth Meyers” host told his audience Monday about the birth of his second child.
Meyers said he figured he had plenty of time when his wife, Alexi Ashe, went into labor Sunday. He was feeding his son around lunchtime when his mother-in-law burst in to announce that his wife was in labor.
They booked an Uber and the couple and the doula were on the way down their building. On the elevator, Ashe experienced an “intense amount of pain.”
They had managed to reach the building’s steps when Ashe told him she couldn’t make it to the car. Even as Meyers and the doula encouraged her to wait until the hospital, his wife lay down on the lobby floor to give birth.
“The only way I can describe how my wife looked was she looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants,” said Meyers. “It was like someone who was trying to sneak a baby on a plane.”
The 44-year-old said he called 911 and over the course of a minute said, “We’re about to have a baby. We’re having a baby. We had a baby.”
“I went from someone calling in about an emergency to just sharing good news with a stranger,” he shared.
Emergency responders took his wife and their son, Axel, to a hospital.
The couple has a 2-year-old son; Meyers noted that his birth was also “dramatic” and was nearly born in an Uber en route to the hospital. NVG
