Escaño’s ‘Ang Guro’ wins big in 20th Gawad Pasado
Highly-acclaimed Cinemalaya 2017 entry “Ang Guro Kong ‘Di Marunong Magbasa” is the big winner at the recently concluded 20th Gawad Pasado awards.
Film director Perry Escaño can’t be any happier with his movie winning four out of 10 categories:
- 2018 Gawad Pasado Best Story
- 2018 Pinakapasadong Pelikula sa Pagpahalaga ng Edukasyon
- Marc Justine Alvarez 2018 Gawad Pasado Best Child Actor
- Alfred Vargas for Gawad Pasado Special Award and for being nominated from different Gawad Pasado categories
In his Facebook post, Escaño thanked everyone who took part in the film – from the production team to the marketing team, including the journalists who all helped to inform the public about the movie.

Inspired by true events, the film talks about the recruitment of innocent children as full-pledged members of separatist groups.
Article continues after this advertisementBecause of this pressing problem, Aaquil, a farmer played by Vargas, assumes the work of an educator and teaches children how to read and write despite being an illiterate himself.
Article continues after this advertisementThe cast includes Mon Confiado, Lou Veloso, James Blanco, Kiko Matos, Loren Burgos, Garie Concepcion, Alvin Barcelona, Paul Sy, Lianne Valentin, and Lorraine Salvador.
Also part of the cast are three awarded child actors – Miggs Cuaderno, Marc Justine Alvarez and Micko Laurente.
The film has merited commercial release and had school screenings with the aim of enlightening students about the abuse done on kids used in wars.
