WATCH: KZ Tandingan performs medley of Mandarin songs; translation shows heartbreaking lyrics

KZ Tandingan faced the challenge of singing in Mandarin with a mash-up of three classic songs on reality competition “Singer 2018.”

Her performance begins at the 44th-minute mark.

The soulful rendition was a slowdown from last week’s high-energy “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele where she also included a Filipino rap. On the competition, she admitted that learning how to pronounce Chinese words was a challenge.

It was clear from this week’s episode that the songs were emotional for Tandingan and for audiences, and netizen Drew Sacapaño’s translation of the medley revealed why.

The songs speak of love lost and an aching heart with lyrics such as “What else do you want from me/Your sudden messages are enough to make me feel sad” and “What else can I do/Still, in the end I won’t be in your arms.”

It only earned her sixth out of eight in terms of ranking for the week. However, she is safe for the next episode of the Chinese show as her average score put her in the top three in the overall rankings.

Other contestants include British pop singer Jessie J, who placed second in the week’s episode, and Chinese and Taiwanese musicians.

Tandingan said on “Tonight with Boy Abunda” that there is no cash prize but that the reward is the opportunity to “penetrate the Chinese market.”  /ra
