Stars recall their most memorable Golden Globe moments

LOS ANGELES—In celebration of the Golden Globe Awards’ 75th anniversary, we asked some stars their most memorable moments at the kudos show that honors excellence in both television and film.

The annual show takes place on Jan. 7 (Monday morning, Jan. 8, Manila time) at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Harrison Ford, who met his wife, actress Calista Flockhart, at the 2002 Globes, on what advice he will give to folks attending the awards ceremony for the first time: Well, unless they’re already married, it would be great if they could meet their wife there.

Colin Farrell on how he celebrated his 2009 win for “In Bruges” and how he did not allow one negative person to spoil his night: I remember most that my lawyer, who doesn’t go to those things, and who I’ve known since I was 22, called on the phone and he was like, “Oh my God, I am jumping in the shower. Where are you guys going? I’m going to meet you!” And he hates those f***ing things.

He was at home in his pajamas, then an hour later, he was in a suit. I was drinking Coca-Cola, and he was having a glass of champagne. There were five of us in a car park on a roof somewhere. It was that simple and sweet.

I remember I had a conversation with somebody. I won’t say who. When we arrived at the CAA (Creative Artists Agency, one of the top talent agencies in Hollywood) party afterward, this person looked at me and she said, “You know it means nothing, right?”

I was like, “Just let me have this moment and it’s all good, and relax.” It was fine and it took the air out of it, but I was like, wow. Some people, huh? My God, kicking over sand castles and sh*t. But mostly, I was really having a lovely night with people that I adore.

For George Clooney, it was the night he hung out with an icon and other memories: I remember there’s a bar in the back. Lauren Bacall was sitting at the bar with a drink in her hand. I was like, I am having a drink with Betty (her real first name) Bacall. And we sat there. She was foul and everything, saying like, “This f***ing guy…”

It was one of the great nights. We missed half of the awards show, because I was just sitting there, drinking with her. People think that famous people get to hang out all the time. They don’t, really. I am not one of those people who likes to look down or make fun of the award shows, because it’s one moment where I get to catch up with a lot of people I know or some people that I don’t know.

I’ve had such great times … because everybody gets a little sauced. I loved when Renee Zellweger was in the bathroom when she won. And the other ones where somebody was in the bathroom when they won. Because there is no way to hide that, like oh, (laughs) sorry, I was in the can.

It’s fun because I went there starting when I was from television. It’s a place where everybody from television and film are together. It’s not the Emmys and the Oscars, and it’s not separated. Everybody is together. I have always had a great time. Since I started going there in the mid-’90s, it’s become a much bigger event, which is fun, too.

And it’s the 75th. This is a big one, the diamond. There are going to be some good invitations! You’re going to dig into the treasury. That will be fun.”

Helen Mirren: It was the Golden Globes that first recognized my work in a little piece I did for TV with Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, her husband. He directed “Losing Chase.” It was a little low-budget piece. I won a Golden Globe (her first) for my work. I’ve always been grateful for that, because the show was below the radar. So that, for me, was very memorable.

Luckily at the Golden Globes, you don’t have to go far to celebrate, do you? You celebrate both your successes right there and, of course, your failures. I’ve often been at the Golden Globes and obviously not won anything (laughs), but I’m always happy to be there.

There’s nothing like the Golden Globes. It’s a very special evening. It’s so intimate, yet so glamorous. It’s amazing. I feel very privileged that I’ve had the luck to be there a few times.

Nicole Kidman: Oh my gosh. I remember I was nominated (for the first time) for “Billy Bathgate.” I remember going and being completely starry-eyed. I have always enjoyed going. Even when I’m a presenter, it’s fun.

I love getting dressed up. It used to feel completely overwhelming and intimidating, particularly when I was 21, 22. Now, I feel like I’m part of a community. I’ve had my mom and dad at the Golden Globes. I have had my family members. I brought my husband (Keith Urban).

I haven’t brought my children yet (laughs). Maybe one day. For me, the Golden Globe is a collision of work and my personal life. It has brought me an enormous amount of joy.
