The “Star Wars” official website has announced that “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson will be helming a brand new trilogy not based on the Skywalker saga.

According to the statement, new characters will be introduced from a part of the galaxy never before explored. Johnson will write and direct the new trilogy. Longtime collaborator Ram Bergman has come on board to produce.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm said, “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft ‘The Last Jedi’ from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

No other details were revealed for the new trilogy.

The news may explain why direction for “Episode IX” returned to J.J. Abrams, who directed “The Force Awakens”.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will premiere in Philippine cinemas on Dec. 15. JB
