She may have been in the industry for over a decade now, and have proven her acting prowess in many occasions, but “Fallback” director Jason Paul Laxamana believes Kapuso actress Rhian Ramos is still very much underrated.
“I believe Rhian is underused in movies. She deserves to do more,” he said at yesterday’s press conference for the movie.
“Fallback” is the first movie that Laxamana and Ramos have worked on together, and being a director, he knew of the body of work the actress had done in the past.
He cited Ramos at her Metro Manila Film Festival 2016 entry “Saving Sally”, an outstanding performance proven by numerous international nods the movie received.
Also, the team-up of Ramos and Kapamilya actor Zanjoe Marudo is another case of a good Kapamilya-Kapuso mix. Laxamana said he basically does not credit his films’ fate on the usual pre-paired crowd-drawing love teams.
“Kung titignan niyo ‘yung mga past works ko, I never relied on tried and tested love teams. Nag Kiray-Derek Ramsay ako, nag Pokwang-Bret Jackson. I don’t really believe in chemistry, I believe in good acting. As long as ‘yung male and female actors ko magaling sila umarte, I believe they can pull off the chemistry,” he said.
(If you will see my past works, I never relied on tried and tested love teams. I tried Kiray-Derek Ramsay [Love Is Blind in 2016], Pokwang-Bret Jackson [Mercury is Mine in 2016]. I don’t really believe in chemistry, I believe in good acting. As long as my male and female actors could act well, I believe they can pull off the chemistry.)
He is bent on trying to experiment by mixing actors and seeing if they could gel even if they are not officially teamed together.
“Parang ‘di pa sila napagsama, try natin ipagsama, mas na-cha-challenge ako as director kesa sa tried and tested na love team,” he added.
(It’s like, [if] they’ve [certain actors] not worked together yet, let’s try putting them together. I am more challenged as a director when I don’t have to rely on a tried and tested love team.]
Laxamana’s works include “Babagwa” in 2013, “The Coffin Maker” in 2014, “2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten” in 2016, “The Third Party” in 2016 and “Instalado” in 2017, among others.
His latest film was the acclaimed hit “100 Tula Para Kay Stella”. JB
