The “Wonder Woman” film is bound to be iconic as it is the superhero’s first solo big screen splash, and is the first female-directed comic book film with a female protagonist.
Actor Chris Pine, who plays military spy Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman’s love interest, understands why a film portraying powerful women is important.
He said in a Vanity Fair interview: “We’ve seen stories told through the male prism a lot. Men are not all that smart. We tend to want to kill each other all the time, so it’s nice to finally have a fresh, female perspective with important themes.”
Women are vastly underrepresented in Hollywood, with men still dominating not only acting roles but also directorial duties.
He praises the “Wonder Woman” film for showing another side to being a superhero besides constant violence: “To have a female superhero story that is about love and compassion and nurturing of life than the opposite is very important.”
“At the heart of the movie, it’s about people falling in love and being passionate and being heroic,” Pine said. “It’s a great lesson for everyone to learn instead of other movies where shit is blowing up all the time.”
Gal Gadot, who plays the title role, said she wants a view of equality between both women and men.
“Women are strong, smart, and loving, and can be in powerful positions the same way as men,” she said. “It’s so important to have strong female figures, and I hope Wonder Woman will show people that women are equal to men.”
