Norah Jones honors Chris Cornell with ‘Black Hole Sun’ cover
As a tribute to the late Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, Norah Jones performed a sublime piano cover of Soundgarden’s 1994 classic “Black Hole Sun”.
On Tuesday, the American jazz singer performed at the Fox Theatre in Detriot, Michigan, the same venue where Cornell performed his swan song with Soundgarden. Her mellow rendition of the song allowed for much reflection from the mesmerized audience.
As described by Elias Leight of Rolling Stone, Jones skillfully performed the song by “toning down the crashing drone of the original and remaking it as a spare, bluesy number. She sketched a melody with handsome piano chords, and as she sang, she stretched words and toyed with the space between them.”
Cornell, 52, hanged himself in his hotel room last week. Although his death was initially declared by authorities as a suicide, his widow Vicky has issued a statement explaining that Cornell’s taking of extra anti-anxiety pills may have put the musician in an unsound mental state, which possibly drove him to take his life.
Cornell is highly regarded as one of the pioneers of the 1990s grunge rock movement, eventually continuing to have a successful solo career and collaborations. Both Cornell and Jones are Grammy award-winning musicians. Gianna Francesca Catolico/JB
