Amy Schumer to play Barbie in live-action film
The decades-long curvy image of Barbie will turn 360 degrees with the entrance of Amy Schumer.
The Hollywood comedienne is set to portray the role of the epochal blonde doll in the “Barbie” live-action remake slated for 2018, The Hollywood Reporter revealed. Mattel, in sync with producers Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal, will create the fabulous film that rotates around feminism, beauty and accepting one’s body or figure.
The story focuses on Barbie (Schumer) as she wakes up one day realizing that she does not conform to the female standards of fictional Barbieland. She is kicked out from the utopian kingdom of perfect dolls and enters the real world, where she learns that being unique inside and out is a beauty asset. Currently, Sony, the film’s producer, is hiring a female director who will reel the storyline.
“Barbie” will have similar comedic themes to that of the 2015 crime movie “Splash and Big” and Disney’s fairytale rom-com “Enchanted.”
As early as now, several social media users “body-shamed” Schumer for her role and compared her to other characters, such as Miss Piggy from “The Muppets.” Some Twitter users, however, praised the choice to cast a plus-sized comedienne like Schumer.
