There’s no denying Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting chops, and now he’ll be producing one of the most iconic shows of the ’90s.

Dicaprio’s production company Appian Way, which signed a deal with Paramount in March, is bringing an adaptation of the environmental TV cartoon “Captain Planet” to the big screens.

The much-awaited project was originally intended for Sony, but its rights had lapsed and DiCaprio’s team swooped in, as per reports from the Hollywood Reporter.

FEATURED STORIES

The screenplay will be reportedly co-written by Jono Matt and Glen Powell. Aside from writing, early reports indicate that Powell might also be starring in the film alongside Richard Linklater.

“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” rose to prominence in 1990, following the story of five intercultural Earth guardians who could summon the planetary keeper using elemental rings. Once summoned, the titular pun-loving character fought an array of villains who posed a threat to the environment.

The project’s environmental theme is a natural fit for DiCaprio, who’s often been vocal about issues including global warming.

Not much is known about the film’s plot, but Hollywood Reporter sources claimed that the movie could take place years after adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.

Appian Way Productions has yet to announce a timetable for the show’s release, as of this writing.  Khristian Ibarrola
