Jose won the best actress award, a first for the Philippines, for playing the role of a poor mother who was arrested for drug pushing in Brillante Mendoza’s latest opus, “Ma’ Rosa.”
She bested Oscar winners Marion Cotillard and Charlize Theron for the award.
In an interview, Jose said he hopes Duterte will bust drug trafficking in the country, a perennial problem which was featured in the film.
“I am sure that our new President will go to the places where we shoot and look for ‘Ma’ Rosa’ and find out and stop this thing [drug trafficking],” she said.
Asked for his reaction to Jose’s plea, Duterte said: “We will do it. Any suggestion that will help the Filipino people, we will do it. We will give it a try.” AJH/TVJ
