‘Heneral Luna’ earns P180M, just P20M short of breaking even
Just one more week and hit historical biopic “Heneral Luna” will most likely reach the P200-million mark in the box office, allowing its producers to break even.
Its producer and distributor Joji Alonso, who has been regularly posting updates about the film’s earnings, said they had grossed P180,434,088 since the film opened in theaters last September 9.
After a weak start, word-of-mouth and online posts praising the film has boosted “Heneral Luna’s” sales in the box office.
The popularity of the historical film has since snowballed.
From grossing only P15,333,299 during its first week, Alonso, through her Facebook account, said it earned P44,066,423 during the second week. The film’s earnings more than doubled during the third week with P104,010,219.
On September 30 alone, it grossed an additional P8,937,640. It earned P8,086,507 the day after, resulting in a total of P19,565,912.
“Heneral Luna – P19,565,912 left to reach 200M and break even after grossing another P8,086,507 yesterday. [Please,] please continue to support this film!” Alonso posted on Facebook.
Its producers had previously declared that “Heneral Luna” is the “highest grossing historical film of all time” in the Philippines.
Earlier reports said the film, which has inspired lively debates online and offline, has been chosen as the country’s bet for the 2016 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film category. Kristine Angeli Sabillo, INQUIRER.net/CDG
