Even if I didn’t have a gay son, I would still be one with the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community.

That’s why I celebrate the victory of marriage equality in the United States. Hopefully, the Philippines will follow suit.

As I’ve always said, “One love fits all.”  On that note, here are the musings of Arnell Ignacio, who got engaged to his boyfriend Ken Psalmer:

FEATURED STORIES

“The proposal that happened   at the Diamond Hotel was to make our relationship official. We were already a couple, but I couldn’t help declaring my feelings for him in a grand way.

“I haven’t spoken with my ex-wife for years, but I know she’s fine. My daughter, Sophia, was initially apprehensive. But I explained to her that the best way to understand my decision is to get to know Ken. Now, she’s okay with it.

“For gays who are still in the closet, let me quote lines I read somewhere: ‘Closets are for clothes, not for people. The fear of negative reactions  may be scarier in your mind than in reality. What you are is not subject to community approval.’

“For gays in a relationship, it is so wonderful to be in love,  but match the intensity of your love with the maturity of understanding. Be a skillful listener.

“It’s Ken’s wish to sing in a band again. So I formed a band for him. They will soon perform at Midas Hotel. I want to help fulfill all his dreams because he is a dream come true for me.”

Being the child of someone famous has its pros and cons. You have big shoes to fill. I should know because I experienced it myself.

That’s why I totally empathize with “next-gen” artists, Karylle, Isabella Gonzalez, Robin Nievera and Paolo Valenciano. They top-bill “The Next Attraction” at Music Museum on July 4, 8 p.m. (For tickets, call 8919999).

As they step out of their parents’ shadows, they are set to find their own light. Zsa Zsa Padilla (Karylle), Kuh Ledesma (Isabella), Pops Fernandez and Martin Nievera (Robin), and Gary Valenciano (Paolo) will serve as the wind beneath their wings.

Here’s my one-on-one with Paolo:

What made you decide to follow in your dad’s footsteps?

There is no way I can even come close to my father’s achievements. My strength is more in directing.

What’s the hardest part about stepping out of your dad’s shadow?

Everything! There is no room for ego. You need a lot of humility or the world will humble you. And that usually hurts.

How did your dad discipline you?

He spanked me once, which changed me for the better.

What has your dad taught you by example?

His commitment to quality. He never settles  for mediocrity.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done with your dad?

We went to Six Flags Magic Mountain wearing short shorts, high socks and superhero capes.

What don’t people know about Gary V?

He is funny, funnier than he wants people to know.
