MANILA, Philippines—“Miss Jamaica was robbed.”
That was the sentiment of Filipino netizens as they backed Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell to be the 63rd Miss Universe when the country’s bet Mary Jean Lastimosa failed to secure a spot in the competition’s final five on Monday.
“Jamaica” became the top trending topic in the country shortly after the results of the Miss Universe 2014 were announced.
Fennel was proclaimed fourth runner-up while Miss Colombia Paulina Vega was given the crown.
Filipinos took to social media to express their support for the 22-year-old Jamaican beauty.
Director Jose Javier Reyes said, “So who do I think should’ve been crowned? JAMAICA. For a change. Not another Latina Barbie doll. But that’s just MY opinion.”
Activist Renato Reyes noted, “Lakas ng audience reaction na 4th runner up lang si Jamaica. Sayang din ang ‘first winner without hair extensions’ scenario.”
Facebook user Roslyn Rosejos said, “It’s obvious Ms. JAMAICA aced it. Even the audience gave a loud boo when she lost. Colombia didn’t even answer the final question correctly.”
Another Facebook user Joe Panares said, “I agree it should be Miss Jamaica. She answered all the questions gracefully.”
Rencel Bacsarpa on Facebook lamented that the competition was rigged. “Miss JaMaica should have placed higher, if not THE REAL WINNER..!!!! Feeling disappointed!! #MsUniverse is a certified COOKING SHOW!!! It’s not April yet and you cannot fool the entire world!!!!” AJH
