MANILA, Philippines—An independent film influenced by Spanish culture won best film on Monday in the first annual Equality International Independent Film Festival held in Oakland, California.
“In Nomine Matris” (Sa Ngalan ng Ina) won the Asian/American Best Feature Film award in the said film contest, according to Filipino-American film director Will Fredo.
Aside from bagging the best film award, “In Nomine Matris” lead star Liza Diño also won the Best Female Performance award.
The said film revolves on the story of a dancer named Mara Bonifacio Advento (Diño) and the struggles she has faced after landing a job in a prestigious dance show which is about to go on tour. The film features the Spanish dance Flamenco as a vital part of its storyline.
In Nomine Matris has previously won top prizes in the International Film Festival Manhattan while Diño bagged the 38th New Wave Metro Manila Film Festival 2014 Best Actress award for her role in the said film.
Meanwhile, Sid Lucero won best actor and Lemuel Lorca bagged the best director award for the film “Mauban: Ang Resiko.”
The first Equality International Film Festival is “the largest film and music festival on the West Coast that speaks out against economic and social inequality by showcasing upcoming artists, filmmakers, and musicians both nationally and internationally.” With Bayani San Diego Jr., PDI
