Friends from the entertainment and political sectors fondly remember Elaine Cuneta, mother of singer-actress Sharon “Megastar” Cuneta.

Elaine passed away on Wednesday after a lingering illness. She was 79.

Francis Pangilinan, Mega’s husband and Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization, told the Inquirer that the wake is at Santuario de San Antonio, McKinley Road, Forbes Park, Makati.

Batangas governor, actress

It’s very difficult to console a friend in this situation. I can only pray for the repose of Mommy Elaine’s soul and for strength for her family, especially my friend Shawie (Sharon’s nickname).

She laughed at all my jokes when I joined Shawie’s concert tour in 2005. She was always gracious and warm. Our family will pray for her loved ones during this very difficult time.

We love the Cunetas and will forever be grateful to Tita Elaine and Apo Mayor (Pablo Cuneta) for their friendship and generosity. In spite of the trials, walang iwanan talaga ’yung mag-asawa. Di na ’ata uso ang katulad nila.

She was a very generous lady, a handsome woman and solicitous mom to Sharon and Chet. Stay strong, Shawie. There are many people who loved your mom, and who love you.

Tita Elaine was always very friendly to me. Sharon is a strong Christian and I am confident that she understands that God knows our sorrows and that He is close to the broken-hearted. I am holding her up in prayer.

Raymart Santiago

Actor

I’d like to assure Sharon that her mom is now in a better place, with Tito Pablo (Cuneta).

So many of us lost our mothers this year. (I lost my mom, and so did Raymart Santiago). I know the pain of losing your mom. But I’ve realized that at a certain point, loving also means letting go. Perhaps Sharon can console herself with the fact that she did her duty the best she could, and that her mom was very proud of her.

Mommy Elaine was such a generous person, not only to her family and siblings, but to everyone she knew or encountered. She was giving, and not only in terms of material things; she also showed genuine concern for others. She was always prim and proper when she visited Sharon in shootings. She also had a sense of humor. Even though I am deeply saddened … I know that she is now free from all pain.
