‘Rurouni Kenshin’ director, cast named “Cultural Friendship Ambassadors” to PH

MANILA, Philippines – In a ceremony held Thursday morning at Fairmont Makati, Takeru Sato, the actor who plays Kenshin Himura in the world-renowned Japanese film “Rurouni Kenshin”, was named “Cultural Friendship Ambassador” to the Philippines by Makati Councilor Tosca Puno-Ramos.

Along with Sato, the film’s director, Otomo Keishi, as well as his fellow cast members Emi Takei (Kaoru Kamiya) and Munetaka Aoki (Sanosuke Sagara), were also designated as ambassadors during the 30-minute ceremony.

Sato, in his Japanese speech, said that the “Rurouni Kenshin” cast and crew were happy to bring their movie to the country. The 25-year-old actor said he was surprised that “Rurouni Kenshin” was the first Japanese movie to hold a premiere in the Philippines. Nevertheless, they hope to bring more Japanese movies in the country in the next months and years to come, he added.

Munetaka Aoki on the other hand thanked the Philippine team for inviting them to attend “this great event,” referring to the Asian Premiere of the film.

Meanwhile, director Otomo Keishi said: “We were welcomed by everyone so warmly, with that we were able to celebrate with a little alcohol last night,” causing the media crowd to crack in laughter. “I hope [our] friendship between the Philippines and Japan will continue. Please support and enjoy our movie,” he continued.

Cast members were then presented with gifts by Warner Bros Philippines General Manager Francis Soliven.

Sato, who accommodatingly opened his box right after receiving it, wore the scarf that was given to him halfway through the conference, while Takei said she would open hers in her hotel room.

The ceremony was officially closed by Warner Bros Japan General Manager Bill Ireton.

Before the team headed back to their hotel rooms, the actors had their photos taken in front of a public utility vehicle adorned with a Rurouni Kenshin art.

Keishi and the actors are set to meet with fans in a public press conference to be held at the Glorietta Activity Center at 6 p.m. Takei Emi, however, won’t be able to attend the event.
