“People said we looked good together, so we tried to be together. But we realized we were better off as friends,” said actress Cristine Reyes of her short-lived relationship with occasional costar Derek Ramsay.

Cristine and Derek admitted they were a couple in August. They confirmed the breakup, “a mutual decision,” in October. “I asked for space, but he didn’t believe in that,” said Cristine during a press con for Viva Films’ “When the Love is Gone.”

There was “no major reason” for the split, she said. “Unlike what was reported, there was no third party,” she added, noting  that Derek was never jealous of her ex-boyfriend, actor Dennis Trillo, with whom she still hangs out. “Dennis and I are close; I’m friends with his siblings. I spent last Christmas and New Year’s Day with them.”

The actress denied the rumor that fellow Kapamilya artist Ynna Asistio got romantically involved with Derek while she was still with him. “Ynna and I hardly get to talk these days, but I’m close to her and her family. I used to visit her, and she would hang out at mine sometimes. Kawawa naman si Ynna. I want this straightened out,” Cristine stressed.

Reuniting with Derek is not likely, she said. “There’s still love there, but I want to enjoy being single for now— I’m free to do what I want, able to prioritize things. I’m at a point in my career where I want to grab all opportunities that come my way. Derek does, too.”

The actress related, smiling, “It was funny when we broke up—nag-inuman pa kami pagkatapos.”

Cristine plays lead in the Andoy Ranay film “When the Love Is Gone,” based on the Danny Zialcita movie “Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi.” She plays Gabby Concepcion’s mistress in the movie that also features Alice Dixson, Andi Eigenmann and Jake Cuenca.

Cristine did nine love scenes in the movie. “I felt nervous and [uneasy] at the beginning, but was okay after a few shooting days. I was starstruck with Kuya Gabby,” she said. “The hardest to make was the love scene in the water; I was so cold.”
