Fashion influencer Heart Evangelista expressed the hope that “women [would] help each other more instead of stepping on each other,” especially in an industry like show biz where women are usually pitted against one another.

During her launch as the new ambassador of an intimate apparel of a beauty company on Thursday, May 2, INQUIRER.net asked Evangelista how female friendships contribute to the overall landscape of women’s empowerment, as she is an avid advocate of uplifting fellow women and shaping a world where every woman feels confident and empowered.

The Kapuso actress underscored that one’s “heart” or personality will matter more at the end of the day, as she acknowledged that “women can be tough on each other” especially in a society where it is dictated that “everything is a competition.”

“The honest truth, I feel like women can be tough on each other, especially in our industry. We grew up to think everything is a competition. You’re just as good as your number. But as you grow older, those will fade. Your career won’t be a career one day. It’s your heart that will stay,” she said.

Evangelista remarked that “being there for each other” and “being humble” are ways to make female friendships work.

“No one is perfect, it’s a test of time. Again only time will tell. Hopefully everybody will just help each other, not step on each other, be there for each other. All you have to do woman to woman is ask, when they see you’re humble by all means ‘Go I’ll help you,’ ganon naman ‘yon.” she continued.

Evangelista asserted that she tries to empower fellow women in any way that she can, as she admitted that she has grown stronger to embrace her flaws and the sometimes the rude comments of some people.

“I try very, very hard. Syempre magpapakatao lang ako, ako naman rin, I don’t feel good about myself all the time, especially on social media ‘pag nilabas mo sarili mong ganon, you’re open to all comments and all of that. But I feel like I’m very immune, my strength, I’m stronger now. It’s definitely empowering to use what I have in my life in a sense to inspire and help other women,” she explained.

The Filipina socialite shared that only when she grew older did she learn to be more confident and to stop being hard on herself. She then advised people who are still learning to be safe in their own skin.

“My advice in general for people or women who are not that at ease with who they are, ‘It’s alright. Don’t be hard on yourself. It’s normal. Pero konting pitik, konting suntok, konting ano pa mabi-build up mo rin ‘yung self-worth mo,” she said.

“Ikaw mismo magmamahal sa sarili mo and the rest will follow. And even if they don’t love you, it doesn’t matter if you love yourself. That’s all. Winner ka,” added the fashion icon.
