A fitting tribute to Comedy King

/ 06:47 PM April 22, 2013

DOLPHY statue stands in front of Museo Pambata on Roxas Boulevard, one of the late comic’s secret pet causes. NIÑO JESUS ORBETA

Comedy King Dolphy’s statue was unveiled on April 16, which is also the birthday of Dolphy Jr. Present at the event were his proud children—Sally, Eric, Epy, Ronnie, Vandolph,  Rolly, Dolphy Jr., Edgar and his sister  Laura. According to  Sally, Mayor Alfredo Lim told them that the statue was erected in front of Museo Pambata on Roxas Boulevard because, without their knowledge, their dad had donated a lot to the museum.

I’m sure Pidol’s monument will soon become a tourist spot—a fitting tribute to the man who not only made it more fun in the Philippines but reinvented fun for us.

There is a little of Pidol in every Pinoy.

FEATURED STORIES

‘Coming Soon’

We, at the Cinema Evaluation Board, gave “Coming Soon” a B rating (which entitles it to 65 percent rebate on the amusement tax).

The film lets you in on the inner workings of the young and restless. It will make you laugh, yet it will also make you ponder. The lead stars—Andi Eigenmann, Boy2 Quizon, Dominic Roco, Cholo Barretto and Glaiza de Castro—jelled very well. They make you feel like you’re part of their  group so it’s easy to empathize with the characters. Producer Ronald Singson says, “I hope Pinoys will watch this. We just want to make them laugh.”

Mark Herras, John Estrada, Chito Miranda, Lilia Cuntapay and Ricky Davao all made a splash in cameo roles. The movie serves to remind us that sometimes, even if we still don’t know where we’re going, we should make sure to enjoy the journey—and the scenery as well.

Janine’s bashers

Some Twitter  bashers of Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon have gone overboard. Just because she split up with her boyfriend, Jaypee Santos, they are accusing The Script vocalist Danny O’Donoghue of being the culprit since the singer and the beauty queen reportedly keep in touch.

Jaypee  is gentleman enough to defend Janine, saying they  just need time and space.

Breakups are always tricky. The next person who comes along can easily be blamed for the split. However,  he or she is actually the  after-effect. Be that as it may, I hope people will go easy on Janine. Live and let live, love and let love!

Speaking of beauty queens, I asked Gloria Diaz (one of the judges for the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 competition) why she thought Ariella Arida bagged the Miss Universe Philippines title.

“She projected confidence and was quite a standout,” said Glo.

But I must say that during the Parade of Beauties at the opening of the pageant, Glo outshone them all.

Guess list

• Controversial Personality wanted to do a repeat of his recent project but the director refused because he caught CP taking drugs during work hours.

A repeat performance may only make CP a “repeat offender”!

• An actor whose gender has long been questioned was stunned when Old Timer, hollered “Hoy bakla!” when they bumped into each other in the hallway of a studio. The actor played deaf but bystanders heard it loud and clear.
